The Covered Market of Oxford Est.1774
Discover over 50 independent shops, cafes, bars and experiences all under one historic roof.About this experience
The Covered Market in Oxford, England is one of the city’s best-loved historic attractions — a large, covered indoor market first opened in 1774 and still thriving today.
History & Origins
-
The Covered Market officially opened on 1 November 1774, built to bring Oxford’s numerous outdoor stalls (then scattered on High Street and Queen Street) into a single organised space and clear the busy streets.
- It was designed by architect John Gwynn, who also worked on Magdalen Bridge and other Oxford landmarks. The original market began with around 20 butchers’ shops and soon expanded to include a wider range of stalls.
-
-
Today it’s recognised as one of the oldest continually operating markets in the UK and has been a vital part of the city’s commercial and social life for over 250 years.
What You’ll Find There
The Covered Market is home to around 50–60 independent traders offering:
-

-

-
Gift shops, fashion, flowers, and local crafts
-
