Visit Christ Church Oxford
About this experience
Christ Church College
Founded in 1546 by Henry VIII, Christ Church is one of the largest and most prestigious colleges of the University of Oxford. Known for its grand architecture and rich history, the college uniquely combines an academic institution with a working cathedral, Christ Church Cathedral, making it both a college chapel and the seat of the Bishop of Oxford.
At the heart of the college lies Tom Quad, the largest quadrangle in Oxford, crowned by Tom Tower, designed by the renowned architect Christopher Wren. The Great Hall, with its long wooden tables and portraits of distinguished figures, has inspired visitors for centuries and even served as a filming location for the Harry Potter films.
Christ Church has educated numerous prominent figures, including 13 British prime ministers and author Lewis Carroll, who wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland while teaching mathematics there. Surrounded by the peaceful Christ Church Meadow, the college remains a symbol of Oxford’s academic excellence, architectural beauty, and cultural legacy.
